Boreland village is about 7 miles north Lockerbie where there are good local amenities and a golf course. Lochmaben, about another 5 miles away also has a golf course and some lochs, one of which offers sailing. If you head north from the village towards Eskdalemuir you can lose yourself in the wilds of the Borders, one of the emptiest landscapes in the UK.  The Tibetan Buddhist Centre of Samye Ling is based there.  The temple is stunning and is open to all visitors - one of their meditation courses might appeal.

Traquair House - the oldest continuously occupied ‘house’ in Scotland (it’s a castle really!) is not far and is a delightful drive through the Borders countryside.

Both Glasgow and Edinburgh are less than 2 hours drive away. The cross country route to Edinburgh takes in the source of the river Tweed and meanders all the way down the river's valley towards Peebles.  The village of Moffat is a great place to take in, an attractive 19th century spa town, it is full of wee shops and cafes. The Station Park in the summer is a riot of planting and regularly wins prizes for the floral displays.  The outlet centre at Gretna Gateway is only half an hour down the motorway and boasts stores like Ralph Lauren, Gap, Austin Reed, Denby, to name but a few.

Sports available in the region include:  golf, fishing, quad biking, riding, carriage driving, cycling, stalking, sailing, curling & ice skating (winter)

Surroundings

The nearest town is Dumfries, an excellent shopping centre and full of history. The birthplace of Robert Burns, Scotland's national bard, who lived in the area for most of his short life. For a unique view of the city visit the Camera Obscura!  The Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust Centre at Caerlaverock just outside Dumfries boast flocks of thousands of geese in the winter and observation hides overlooking the Solway Firth from which you can catch a glimpse of many unusual bird varieties.  One of the last strongholds of the red squirrel is in Dumfries & Galloway and you may catch a glimpse of one around Boreland Village

There are a number of notable botanic gardens in the area - Dawyck is a famous woodland garden with a spectacular show of azaleas and rhodendrons in spring and early summer.  Logan Gardens would make a good day trip to the gulf stream warmed southern peninsula of Dumfries and Galloway.  Craigieburn Gardens near Moffat is a real little gem.  With terrain reminiscent of Nepal, Himalayan plants thrive. The famous Royal Botanic Gardens at Edinburgh is made up of 70 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds just outside the city centre.  Museums and art galleries abound in Edinburgh as well as serious shopping opportunities, fine dining and, of course, the famous Festival.

The UK’s first Dark Sky Park has been established in the Galloway Forest Park - officially one of the best places for star-gazing in the world.  There is so little light pollution that you get the best view of the stars imaginable.  You might also spot some of the Forest’s wildlife - otter, deer, nightjar, black grouse.
